PATCH: Free Laundry Service Opens For Students In Astoria

ASTORIA, QUEENS — A laundromat in Astoria will provide free laundry services to 30 low-income families in the neighborhood.

The services, funded with the Blackstone-backed Champlain Hudson Power Express project, will run out of 14th Laundry located at 3067 14th St.

The families in Zone 126 will be able to drop off laundry twice per month.

“We think it’s a great program,” Angelo Palavros, co-owner of the laundromat, told Patch. “As for charity and helping the community, it’s the first step in the right direction.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Thursday morning with Richards, Anju J. Rupchandani, executive director of Zone 126, Council Member Tiffany Caban, and others.

“Revolutionary initiatives come in all shapes & sizes, whether it’s by making Queens a global leader in clean energy or ensuring our students have clean clothes for school,” Queens Borough President, Donovan Richards, said in a tweet.

The Champlain Hudson Power Express is a multi-billion dollar buried pipeline project to help New York transmission to renewable energy sources, expected to start operating in 2026.
